North Trafford residents have been hit by a double whammy by Trafford Labour. Council Tax
is increasing by 7.49% bringing the average or Band D Council Tax charge to £2,120.84 for
2025/26. The council had to ask the government for special permission to increase Council
Tax to the inflation-busting level and had to be loaned nearly £10m by the Treasury to
balance the books. Labour is also charging a £45 annual charge for garden waste collection.
Nationally, just weeks after the General Election, the new Labour Chancellor Rachel Reeves
announced a cut to the Winter Fuel Payment, which will reduce it by between £100 and
£300. This money would usually have helped an estimated 36,147 pensioners in Trafford
with their heating bills during the winter.
Jonathan Coupe, Chairman of North Trafford Local Conservatives, commented on Trafford
Labour’s Budget, “Under the last Conservative administration, the average Band D Council
Tax charge was £1,486 and Trafford had the lowest Council Tax rates in Greater
Manchester. Now, Labour had increased that bill up to over £2,100, which is an increase of
over £600 since they took control of the council in 2018.
“Labour’s proposal to charge £45 to empty green bins comes after 88.7% of respondents to
the council’s own consultation on the charge responded that they disagreed with the
proposal. This double tax whammy from Labour follows on from the Labour administration
choosing to award themselves an extra 42% in allowances or pay, costing approximately
£200K per year from 2023.
“Labour has got their priorities wrong both nationally, such as through the cut to the Winter
Fuel Payment, and locally, through this Budget and Trafford Labour awarding themselves the
huge rise in allowances or pay.
“As there are no local elections in Trafford in 2025, residents can still have their say on the
double Tax whammy by completing a brief survey below. Your views matter to us and will help to
inform us on what we should be focussing on, on your behalf.”
